That was a hard bit of work. After a heart attack 0-0 draw, the Werder players sank exhausted into the seats of the team bus. They had just gone through an intensive match that was not for the weak of heart. Most of the Green-Whites could live with the point from the draw. The team was especially pleased with the successful fight from the defence. The result was finally a clean sheet after conceding 14 goals in their last three away matches.
The question: Lost points or a point won?
Goalkeeper Tim Wiese saw the draw as a point won:
"When you look at what went on with us over the winter break, then you have give credit to the team for good aggressiveness and lots of passion. Unfortunately we could not get a goal. That would have been a real reward. All told though that was okay for this stadium, this pitch and this wind. Sometimes you really had to feel sorry for the colleagues. You really couldn't even kick the ball at times."
Captain Clemens Fritz saw it as a point won:
"That was really very intensive. We wanted to stand secure in the back and we were really able to do that. Of course Lautern had a couple of chances, but we also were a bit unlucky up front. We won a point, but it could have been three."
Manager Klaus Allofs saw the draw as lost points.
"Up front we were missing the last bit of pressure, the last tick decisiveness. We had a few chances that we could not use. It was no wonder that we couldn't pass the ball around so well. Those who watched the game at pitch-level could see how much the wind and wet pitch impacted the game."
