The ball may be still this weekend in the Bundesliga but five Werder players were busy playing internationally.
The German U21 national team and Özkan Yildirim picked up a convincing 3-0 victory over the Faroe Islands in Tórshavn for a perfect start to the European Championship qualification. Yildirim played the full 90 minutes and said afterwards: "I played at the six position. We have a very strong team. We could have played a bit more consistently in attack, but altogether I am satisfied."
The Austrian national team suffered a setback in their fight for the 2014 World Cup, losing 3-0 to Germany in Munich without Zlatko Junuzovic (foot injury) and Sebastian Prödl (sat on bench for 90 minutes). Combined with Sweden's 2-1 win over Ireland, Austria dropped from second in the World Cup group standings to third. Austria team officials said after the Germany match that ‘Juno' will also miss the important showdown with Ireland on Tuesday in Vienna (8:45 p.m.). Junuzovic will be leaving the Austrian team to return to Bremen, the officials added.
Reaching Brazil 2014 will be more difficult now for Theo Gebre Selassie and his Czech Republic team, who lost 2-1 at home against underdogs Armenia. Gebre Selassie, who played the full 90 minutes, had one good scoring opportunity but could not convert.
Levent Aycicek, who was a late nomination for the German U20 team, did not play in the first of two matches in Pfullendorf, watching Germany's 2-0 win over Poland from the bench. Aycicek hopes to play in the second match on Tuesday at 6 p.m. against Switzerland.
