The dreams of reaching the 2014 World Cup for Werder players Zlatko Junuzovic and Sebastian Prödl ended Friday evening on the penultimate match day of qualifying.
Junuzovic and Prödl and the Austrian national team suffered a 2-1 defeat against Sweden, meaning the Swedes secured second place in the qualifying group and Austria have no more chance of advancing to the spectacle in Brazil.
There is still hope for Theodor Gebre Selassie as the Werder defender and the Czech Republic beat Malta 4-1 to remain alive in the running for a second spot in their group - and an eventual play-offs ticket. Gebre Selassie himself was not on the roster for the match.
Among other Werder players in international action was Martin Kobylanski, who beat Switzerland's U20 team 2-1 with Poland. Aleksandar Ignjovski, who was nominated by the Serbian team despite an injury, had the match day off as Serbia did not play. But the Serbs will be fighting for three points against Macedonia on Tuesday 15 October 2013.
