Werder winger Eljero Elia played one half of the Netherlands' 0-0 draw against Germany in Amsterdam, coming on at half-time for Arjen Robben and showing a solid performance. But Elia was just one of 12 Werder players on national team duty during the week.

Werder's trio of Austrians Marko Arnautovic, Sebastian Prödl and Zlatko Junuzovic had to accept a 3-0 defeat at home at the hands of Ivory Coast. Arnautovic played the full 90 minutes while Prödl came on for the second half to replace fellow Bundesliga player Emanuel Pogatetz and head coach Marcel Koller did not give Junuzovic an appearance.

Sokratis and Greece beat Ireland 1-0 in Dublin with the Werder defender playing the entire match.

Serbia and Aleksandar Ignjovski also finished their international year with a victory, beating Chile 3-1 in St. Gallen, Switzerland. The Bremen defensive all-rounder played the final five minutes.

Theodor Gebre Selassie and Czech Republic celebrated a 3-0 win over Slovakia at home with the Werder right back setting up the first goal of the evening by David Lafata in the third minute.

Kevin De Bruyne also played the full match but had to settle for a loss as Belgium were defeated 2-1 by Romania in Bucharest.

The German U20 national team suffered their first loss of the international season 2012-13, losing 2-1 in Poland. Bremen players Niclas Füllkrug and Florian Hartherz both played the full 90 minutes while Johannes Wurtz appeared for the first 70 minutes.

Werder's U23 keeper Richare Strebinger also was with his national team, playing the second half for Austria's U21 team in a 1-1 draw against Greece.
