When Sandro Wagner was subbed out after 58 minutes, the fans rose from their seats to applaud the man who had made it 1-0. And Wagner clapped back at them and can be satisfied with his nearly-hour long performance against Borussia Mönchengladbach Saturday evening. "It is nice to be honoured by the spectators," said the Werder striker about the applause. Wagner has improved his form greatly over the last couple weeks and was praised by Werder's bosses as well. "Sandro worked hard today and really eased things up front for Claudio (Pizarro). He also did a lot defensively while being dangerous in front of goal. That is the real Wagner how we want to see him," said manager Klaus Allofs after the draw against Gladbach on the 26th game day.

Scoring goals had been difficult for Wagner until recently. "I am a player who always gives his all. As striker you sometimes need luck as well as confidence. That's why you can't be mad at someone if they don't score. Sometimes there's a click and it flows again," said the 1.94m tall 23-year-old forward.

Wagner: "I received a lot of support"

After the goal a week earlier in Freiburg, it "clicked" again Saturday evening in the 39th minute. After a cross by Pizarro, Wagner extended in the air and nodded the ball in fine fashion across the line. This scene alone displayed the new-found confidence Wagner has collected. But afterwards, Wagner downplayed his showing especially after the Green-Whites failed to collect the three points. "I have received a lot of support from the coach and manager lately. But I hope that I can still give back more in the next few weeks. I'm not worried about my own state. What's important is that we are successful as a team," said the former Duisburg player.
