SV Werder Bremen have played two home matches and two away thus far in the 2012-13 season and sit in the middle of the Bundesliga table with four points. After picking up just one point against Stuttgart, some Werder players started to voice initial hints of criticism about the start of the season "Four points, that is not enough. We have higher expectations. We have played three and a half good matches. On the road, we have shown that we can hold our own against top teams," said Nils Petersen. "We must show in the next couple games that we are a top team. At the moment, it is not enough. People called us a grab bag before the season started, and we proved that again today." Petersen said the team needs to work on its defence. "We cannot forget about that when we push forward. And that starts with me," said Petersen.
Sebastian Prödl also looked back at the first four matches with some criticism. "I do not want to say that we have problems. But we are stuck in a situation which needs a lot of work. We don't live on praise but more on points, and we don't have enough of them. We have played seven of eight halves well but that doesn't help if you don't get the results," said Prödl. "Sure, in the first four weeks we have played three teams who are playing internationally. But now we must show that we belong to that group as well. We must realise that we are in a tight spot in every match. It doesn't matter who the opponent is. The Bundesliga has had enough incredible stories. Everyone can beat everyone and even Eintracht Frankfurt can start with four victories."
Werder manager Klaus Allofs will measure the team on those words and is calling for a development - at best a quick one. "Four points from four matches, that is not enough for the start of a season from my point of view. We have to learn quickly. We missed another chance today to take a big step forward and give ourselves a good position for the coming weeks," said Allofs. "Now we have to learn from our mistakes and perform more boldly in Freiburg."
