It's clear to see how excited the two-time Danish international Yannik Vestergaard is about his new challenge along the Weser. "Werder is a big club with a lot of tradition. I am proud to be here," said Vestergaard in fluent German. Despite having a German mother, he grew up in Denmark and feels more Danish than German. But he doesn't have any problems with the language since he's been playing in Germany for the last five years.
His previous experience with Bremen and Weser Stadium are connected with especially personal moments. "I scored my first Bundesliga goal here," said the 1.99m centre back. In February 2012, he scored to give Hoffenheim the lead in an eventual 1-1 draw. A little more than a year earlier, he was on Hoffenheim's roster for the first time in the 2-1 victory over the Green-Whites on the 18th match day of the 2010-11 season.
And then there was the match in May 2013. With the action "ALLEz Grün", the Werder fans came up with a huge wave of support and pushed their team to avoid relegation. Vestergaard, who was on hand back then playing with Hoffenheim, recalls the whole scene exactly. "That was pretty impressive and it also had influence on us. Whenever I was here, the atmosphere was always very good," said Vestergaard.
The new Werder acquisition can experience that for himself once again this Sunday 1 February 2015 when SVW start the second half of the Bundesliga with the home match against Hertha Berlin at 3:30 p.m. Perhaps there will be his Werder debut for the sympathetic Jannik Vestergaard after his roster and goal debut at Weser Stadium.
