Werder's U23 talents will experience a special encounter next week as the Green-Whites will welcome the U23 team from the North Korean club Sobaeksu Football Club for a test match along the Weser on Wednesday 22 January 2014. Kick-off for the match is at 3 p.m. at the Platz 11 grounds. Entrance is free.
The team from North Korea will be in Germany as part of an exchange program which has existed with the German Olympic Sports Federation (DOSB) and the German Football Federation (DFB) since 2009. The guests want to collect as many impressions from Germany and the European culture as possible during the two and a half week training camp in Heusenstamm near Frankfurt. They will also experience different parts of the sports world. The team, which is be supervised by foreign experts Peter Ueberjahn and Klaus Schlappner, will attend a test match between Mainz and FSV Frankfurt and the Bundesliga match between Eintracht Frankfurt and Hertha Berlin.
In addition to the match against the Werder U23s, the North Koreans will also get a tour of Weser Stadium and have lunch together with the Green-Whites' Regionalliga team. Werder supervisory board chairman Willi Lemke, who was contacted by the North Koreans, emphasised the importance of the guests from Asia. "This visit is important because it demonstrates that sports can build bridges," said Lemke. Frank Baumann, director of professional football and scouting, also is looking forward to the unusual encounter. "We are looking forward to such an interesting match-up with a team from Asia. This match and the exchange once again underlines that football can connect people throughout the world - regardless of culture, politics and distance," said Baumann.
The guests from North Korea also have another test match scheduled for Saturday 25 January 2014 against Regionalliga team VfR Wormatia 08 Worms at 2 p.m.
