Triathlon completed! The Werder players completed their in-team triathlon Thursday morning. After going through the swimming and running disciplines on Monday, the final portion of the triathlon - the cycling - was on tap in the morning after the Green-Whites' 5-2 win over Wacker Innsbruck. Galvez, Bartels and Co. raced 6,000 meters over 400 meters elevation. In the end, the Galvez/Strebinger/Makiadi team arrived first at the Kreuzjochalm at 1,900 meters to secure the overall win in the Werder triathlon.
"It was so strenuous but it was worth it - after all, we won," said Cedrick Makiadi afterwards. "As a footballer, you always want to win, even if it's just a game of cards. But right now, this victory doesn't feel that good because everything is burning," said Richard Strebinger, who then winked and added: "You need to take advantage of this kind of success. Maybe we can work it out that the last-placed team pays for dinner tonight."
Izet Hajrovic was not able to celebrate the win but he thought the team triathlon was absolutely a success. "I have never done something like that before. It was very strenuous but it was a lot of fun. Cycling was by far the most difficult discipline. Unfortunately we couldn't really enjoy this wonderful panorama. But in the end what counts is that we all had fun and got to know each other a bit more," said the new acquisition, who was fourth place with teammates Nils Petersen and Raphael Wolf.
A special applause went to Theodor Gebre Selassie at the winner's ceremony. He was the only player who completed the entire distance because Marnon Busch could not continue on because of minor thigh problems. "We are a team, good job Theo!" praised coach Robin Dutt the effort of the Czech international. There was also a compliment from the coach to the entire team. "I have done this before with other teams but I can tell you that this was the hardest team triathlon I've had. I know that some of the guys were pretty mad while they were competing. But I will make it up. I promise you," said Dutt. This should be interesting.
