Just before the end of the winter transfer window, Werder Bremen made a move and signed Brazilian defender Samuel with immediate effect. The 24-year-old centre back comes to the Weser without a transfer fee and signed on a contract until the end of the season. "Samuel" Firmino de Jesus had taken part in Bremen team training over the past couple days. The robust defender last played for FC Sao Paulo Futebol Clube in the Brazilian top flight Campeonato Brasileiro Série A.
"Samuel is a young, talented player who can play both as centre back and full back. We are anxious to see how he develops with us over the coming months," said manager Klaus Allofs in the afternoon.
Samuel's official presentation will come on Wednesday 2 February 2011 as part of a press discussion in the press conference room at Weser Stadium. It was not announced what time it will take place.
