Swiss international Francois Affolter will be wearing the SV Werder Bremen jersey in the second half of the Bundesliga season. The 20-year-old centre back from Swiss top flight club Young Boys Bern on Wednesday signed a contract putting him on loan with the Green-Whites until 31 December 2012. Werder then have the option of fully acquiring Affolter.
Affolter has been in Bremen since Tuesday evening. He went through the medical check-up Wednesday morning and is due to train with the club on Thursday.
"We are very happy that Francois can join us immediately and we are certain that he will also help us in the short term," said manager Klaus Allofs. Head coach Thomas Schaaf talked about the strengths of the new acquisition. "He is technically well trained, is very quick and has a good overview. He has a certain calmness with the ball. He is a younger player with a lot of potential," said Schaaf.
Affolter began his professional career at 17 years of age with Young Boys Bern, where he continually earned more focus thanks to strong performances over the past three years. He currently is part of the Swiss U21 and senior national teams. In 2011, he helped Switzerland to a runner-up spot at the U21 European Championship. He made his senior national team debut on 11 August 2010 against Austria. He has earned four caps for the Swiss senior side and coach Ottmar Hitzfeld.
