It was a very intensive weekend for the Werder players to start the season preparations. They trained twice on Saturday and for two hours on Sunday. Philipp Bargfrede missed Sunday's practice with knee problems.

"The first days should also be a test of will for the guys. And everyone could see that they can take it. There was still a high quality after two hours," praised Werder head coach Robin Dutt after his team's Sunday training. The modification of the training routine was accepted by the players. "Being on the pitch for two hours is definitely a change compared to Thomas Schaaf's work. Every coach has his own philosophy. It was a good training today, it was long but it was mixed up with tactical notes despite the conditioning work. Besides, we had the afternoon off. I am anxious to see how it continues on Norderney," said striker Nils Petersen.

The change to the new coach is a not a big challenge for the striker. "For me it's nothing new because I have experienced so many coaching changes in my career. But it's certainly more noticeable how much the coaching staff has changed for players who have trained under Thomas Schaaf for so many years," added Petersen. The 24-year-old was not only talking about the training work. "It's also the type of coaches. At the beginning, every player had to adjust to what kind of humour the coach has, how he reacts if something doesn't go right or if someone doesn't understand something. Everybody is looking at that now," said Petersen.

One player who couldn't observe those nuances was Philipp Bargfrede, who was suffering from the first injury of the preparations. He turned his right knee during training Tuesday afternoon and had to sit out on Sunday. "It's still too early to get a final diagnosis. There will be further examinations on Monday. I hope he only misses a couple of days. I hope Philipp gets back soon," said Dutt. Since then it was announced that the midfielder would travel to Augsburg for further examinations and will not travel to Norderney on Monday.
