The team was already on the pitch when Clemens Fritz approached the grounds Wednesday morning with his running shoes on. The right back had to sit out training Tuesday after surgery on his vocal chords. But just one day later he was back on his way towards head coach Thomas Schaaf. A handshake and a small chat, then Fritz was off to run some laps. "The operation went well but I still have to be a bit cautious," said Fritz quietly and gently to take care of the vocal chords.
His Werder teammates were able to let out some bigger cheers in training. And it was well deserved after the many fine goals in the six-on-six training match. Marko Marin for example scored with a heal volley with his back to the goal. Denni Avdic blasted his shot off the lower half of the crossbar and over the goal line. And Torsten Frings flicked a goal into the upper corner while Pascal Testroet scored on a looping ball.
Dominik Schmidt did not score a goal in the training session - mainly because the defender was not even on the pitch. The 23-year-old had to sit out training with knee problems. Schaaf said the team must wait and see when Schmidt can return to training. The next chance for a comeback to team training is Thursday morning at 10 a.m.
