What is Joseph Akpala up to actually? More and more Werder fans have been asking that the last couple of weeks. The striker, who suffered a left knee ligament tear in training in March, was finally able to provide an answer himself on Monday. "I went through a rehab program in Belgium. I have been back in Bremen since yesterday because starting now I can work on individual elements on the pitch," the 26-year-old told WERDER.DE after he was finally spotted again on the pitch again with athletics coach Reinhard Schnittker.

It's been about seven weeks since Akpala left the training grounds aided by head coach Thomas Schaaf and Schnittker with a pained look on his face and sadness in his eyes. Akpala knew something major must have happened to his knee after the Nigerian had twisted his knee on a shot on goal. The bitter diagnosis came 24 hours later - a knee ligament tear. That meant at least a month and half out. "That was not easy for me. It was my first major injury. But the knee has been okay thus far in rehab. Now I have to be a little patient because I would like to return to the team as quickly as possible," said the striker, who completed his laps parallel to team training and has already started working with the ball.

Aleksandar Ignjovski joined the individual session on Monday. "I already had problems at the final training before the Wolfsburg match which did not really get any better on Saturday. I sat out two days, which was exactly right," said "Iggy". The Serbian international was suffering from a hardening of his right rear thigh but hopes to train with the team again tomorrow.

Akpala is not that far yet. The afternoon will only be his second session on the pitch in Bremen and will be without his teammates.
