Cedrick Makiadi missed the Eintracht Braunschweig match after suffering a thigh knock during the closed Friday training. It was a bitter absence as the German-Congolese plays a major role in the starting line-up for the Green-Whites. And the 29-year-old missed Monday's training - just like Özkan Yildirim.

"Cedrick picked up a thigh knock in training on Friday. He tried it again in the final training but it still ached and he couldn't really sprint," said head coach Robin Dutt about the last-minute absence of Makiadi. It was an unusual situation for Dutt, who had only been without his man in front of the defence on the eighth match day at Stuttgart as Makiadi was out with a ligament strain.

Starting in place of Makiadi was Felix Kroos, a player who had just recovered from an injury. Another long time injury victim Zlatko Junuzovic was also back in the starting line-up. It was the first match in 2014 for both players, who missed the test matches against NEC Nijmegen and Steaua Bucharest. Dutt, however, didn't have any hesitations about starting the duo. "I wouldn't have played them if I didn't have a good feeling. But I was also convinced that it was the right decision. Especially Felix played a good match. He really did us good in playmaking. And ‘Zladdi' really ran a lot," said the coach.

Youngster Julian von Haacke was happy about his first game roster nomination. The 19-year-old Bremen native did not play against Braunschweig but was able to get an idea of what it's like to warm up on the pitch in front of 40,000 Bremen fans. Von Haacke replaced Aleksandar Ignjovski on the roster. "We had a lot of competition within the team. Julian von Haacke had excellent preparations and was given preference for this match. But that can change every week. Nobody should feel too certain and nobody should give up too easily," said Dutt about his rotation.

The personnel competition will only increase as nearly all the players are back from injury. The coaching staff had nearly all players available in the first training session Monday morning. While Clemens Fritz is not expected to return to team training this week, Cedrick Makiadi and Özkan Yildirim were still out for the run down session on Monday. Yildirim received a knock on his left ankle during his nine-minute appearance against Braunschweig and the German U21 international is expected - just like Makiadi - to be back for the next training session on Wednesday.
