Kevin De Bruyne will likely not be available for the important away match against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday (live ticker on WERDER.DE starting at 3:15 p.m.), which would be the first time this season. "Kevin will be sitting in the bus to Leverkusen but it's more than questionable if he can play tomorrow," said head coach Thomas Schaaf Friday after the final training. The Belgian international injured his right thigh in training yesterday and missed the session on Friday.
De Bruyne has thus far played every Werder competitive match this season. The Belgian has missed only four minutes of a possible 2820 minutes - including the German DFB Cup.
Joseph Akpala meanwhile returned to the Bremen squad earlier than originally expected. The striker got back into the team training at the beginning of the week after sitting out seven weeks with a torn ligament in his left knee and missing six matches for the Green-Whites. "He may be back in training since the beginning of the week, but he's not an option for the squad," said Schaaf on Thursday. But the suspensions of Marko Arnautovic and Eljero Elia may have led the Werder coach to change his mind.
Also back on the squad was Aleksandar Ignjovski after the Serbian missed the matches in Düsselsdorf and Wolfsburg with injury and illness. But now he says he is "top fit again and ready to give everything I have for the success in Leverkusen."
Schaaf nominated these 18 players for the match in Leverkusen: Mielitz, Strebinger - Pavlovic, Lukimya, Fritz, Schmitz, Hunt, Prödl, Junuzovic, Ignjovski, Kroos, Akpala, Sokratis, Gebre Selassie, Petersen, Wurtz, Yildirim, Bargfrede.
