The training session Thursday afternoon 26 January 2012 was mainly about new acquisition Francois Affolter. The new Bremen player was participating in team training for the first time. "I really went into training with a lot of excitement. It was a good, new rhythm. Compared to Bern, we work here at a higher technical and tactical level. I can recognise that already," said Affolter after his first session.

Now the Swiss international must be integrated into every area. "I haven't been able to remember all the names. I really have to learn them. I also have to learn the game system as quickly as possible," said Affolter, who considers himself a defender who does not shy away from ball possession.

In addition to Affolter, Schaaf can likely plan on having Aleksandar Ignjovski and Sebastian Mielitz available for Werder's 2012 home debut. "Iggy" is returning after recovering from his adductors problem while "Miele" has gotten past his bruised shoulder. Lukas Schmitz however will not be available against Leverkusen due to a yellow card suspension. The injured Marko Marin is also not an option and Marko Arnautovic is questionable after not training on Thursday with a stomach muscle injury.
