It has been clear to see all week on the faces of the Werder players that they were still aggravated about the painful 5-0 defeat against Dortmund. But they all showed one thing - that they want to make up for it in Sunday's North Derby against Hamburg. Thomas Schaaf's team worked through icy temperatures with loud commands, energetic challenges and support of one another.
"It was a very intensive week of training with a lot of commitment and activity on the pitch. The team showed that it wants to change and do better than against Dortmund. That makes me very positive," the coach said Friday. "We worked intensively the entire week to look at our errors and deal with what happened in the Dortmund match."
Now the team has to implement the results of that work against Hamburg. "We have to go differently into challenges, we cannot let opponents just play their game. We have to take control of the match instead of them just coming at us," said Schaaf about the match on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.
Schaaf said the sickened Aaron Hunt and Marko Arnautovic are feeling slightly better but not well enough to return to training on Friday. "We hope that Aaron can be at the final training tomorrow. But there are still questions about Marko if he will be healthy in time for the game or if he's so weak that he will have to miss the game. We have to be patient, possibly even until Sunday," said Schaaf at the midday press conference.
