Sebastian Prödl, Nils Petersen and Clemens Fritz all missed the Bundesliga match against Schalke 04 Tuesday evening with stomach flu. While Werder's captain Fritz and his deputy Prödl both took part in at least an easy running session on Monday, Petersen was completely out of action. But the striker returned to the team on Wednesday for the obligatory post-game run down.
"Today was a pretty intensive sweat for Basti and Clemens. That did them good. You have to slowly get the circulation going again. I was really weakened on Tuesday with headaches," Petersen told WERDER.DE. For Werder's No. 24, the last few days had been an unusual situation. "It was pretty strange crossing your fingers for the team from home. I hope that it will get better day by day and that I can play again on Saturday in Wolfsburg," said the 25-year-old.
Prödl is also getting better after watching the match against Schalke as a spectator. "It's better today than in the last few days. My strength is slowly coming back. If things go well, I can train again normally tomorrow," said Werder's defensive boss.
While Fritz and Prödl overcame their infection, Eljero Elia was the latest to get hit with the stomach flu. The Dutchman, who played 71 minutes against Schalke, missed Wednesday morning's training with the illness. There was good news about Julian von Haacke, who continues to work on his comeback after a torn cruciate ligament. After recently going through a separate program, the 20-year-old talent ran together with the team for the first time.
