The Werder players started the training week with plenty of vigour as they were working to look past the Dortmund disaster and go full steam into the week ahead of the North Derby against Hamburg.
"It was spirited, there was passion. And that is important looking forward to the game on Sunday. ‘Peace, joy and happiness' are not always appropriate. Sometimes there should be some tension in training as well. You shake hands afterwards and everything is okay," said Nils Petersen after the training.
"The Dortmund match showed us some clear insight and there was plenty to talk about the last couple days. For example, that we were much too passive in the challenges and should have supported one another better," said Werder coach Thomas Schaaf about the hours-long analysis of the Dortmund game on Monday.
The team has worked through the 90 minutes against Dortmund and now it is looking forward to the North Derby on Sunday. "We want to do a lot better against Hamburg. We have worked hard on that but still have an intensive week ahead of us," said Schaaf, who was satisfied with his players' vigour. There was a second session in the afternoon.
The derby against Hamburg comes at the right time for the coach and his players. "It's always good to have a game on the following weekend. Then you can show that you can play better. The North Derby always draws a lot of interest. You don't need to emphasize that," said Schaaf. The game will be the 98th Bundesliga showdown between the teams and the Green-Whites are going for their fourth North Derby win in a row at 3:30 p.m.
