Helmets instead of football boots and rain jackets instead of training shirts - Werder Bremen players swapped the ball for the bike Tuesday afternoon 20 September 2011 with head coach Thomas Schaaf taking a 90-minute bike ride with his players.
"Active recovery" was Schaaf's description of the measure. "The burden from last weekend was very heavy. Especially the Nuremberg game really cost a lot of power. The conditions were difficult, the pitch was heavy," said Schaaf.
The Werder troops did not take to the Weser Stadium training grounds as usual but instead through meadows and fields around Bremen for an hour and a half.
Also on hand were Sokratis and Tim Borowski. "Both can ride the bike, but not anything more," said Schaaf about the banged up players. But the Werder coach had to do without Marko Marin. "With Marko we have to see how his rehab training goes," said Schaaf.
