This cannot be happening. Another name was added to Werder's ever-growing list of injuries. Mehmet Ekici needed to miss the first session of training ahead of the important home match against Augsburg with lower stomach problems according to Thomas Schaaf. The Bremen head coach would like to wait for more exact examinations before saying when Ekici could return to training.
Ekici makes it four regular players who have gone down injured since Friday. Both Tim Wiese (facial fracture) and Philipp Bargfrede (left calf muscle strain) suffered injuries in Friday's final training while Sebastian Prödl (muscle strain in left thigh) was injured during Saturday's game against Dortmund.
But there was also good news for the start of the training week. On Tuesday morning, Marko Marin returned to running training after his thigh injury, taking a collective run with Aaron Hunt, Predrag Stevanovic and physiotherapist Florian Lauerer on the Platz 11 grounds. And Marin was optimistic afterwards, saying: "It went super. I didn't have any problems. If everything goes normally I could be back to team training on Thursday."
There is also hope that Naldo could return soon. Schaaf, who recently would not make comments about Naldo, said: "It could be that he trains with the team again tomorrow. If everything goes well we could push him a bit more in the coming weeks." The Brazilian on Tuesday completed a special training under the direction of fitness coach Yann-Benjamin Kugel along with Aleksandar Stevanovic on the Platz 10 grounds.
Swedish striker Denni Avdic has already taken the step back into team training. Francois Affolter meanwhile missed training on Tuesday as he was in Switzerland for a driver's license exam.
