The Green-Whites made clear at the start of the last week of training of the year that they do not want to wait until the winter break to save themselves but want to prepare intensively for the final task before Christmas.

Just how much fire is in the team with Christmas just around the corner could be seen Monday afternoon as team captain Clemens Fritz went at it with young teammate Davie Selke. The striker had too often stuck his hands in the face of the veteran until the 33-year-old Fritz decided to make it known he didn't like it. But things had been cleared up by the end of the session. "Sometimes things can get intensive in training. It looked worse than it was. Everything is cleared up," said the captain. "I apologised to Clemens. I went a little too harsh into a challenge and things got a bit heated. But it was far from a fight like I read on my phone," said Selke on the evening of Werder's Christmas party. For head coach Robin Dutt, the mix-up didn't have any impact. "Emotions are part of football. Davie apologised to the captain, and for me it's over with," said the coach.

The Werder players have an intensive week ahead of them. "It may sound trite, but we have to defend our goal better, be closer to our opponents and be more willing to run. That also goes for the game against Leverkusen," said Werder manager Thomas Eichin.

Dutt got a small gift in the build-up to Christmas in the afternoon as centre back Sebastian Prödl returned to team training. "I am happy that he is back. He completed the whole session. The goal is for him to stay the whole week. If that works out, he could be an option for the 18-man roster against Leverkusen. He would give us more alternatives on defence," said Dutt.
