Four days before the final match of 2011 at Schalke, head coach Thomas Schaaf had a limited group at team training. Mehmet Ekici, Aaron Hunt, Aleksandar Ignjovski, Marko Marin, Naldo, Sokratis and Andreas Wolf all missed training with injuries.
The best hopes for a comeback of that group belonged to Naldo, "Iggy" and Wolf, who all missed the lactate test on Monday. But the coach was somewhat optimistic. "With Naldo and Iggy things have gotten better. But they are not good enough so that they can return to training," said Schaaf. The Brazilian is dealing with a painful bruise while Ignjovski is fighting a groin issue. Wolf, who was substituted out with knee problems against Wolfsburg, is resting his knee and going through a rehab program. But there are hopes for an appearance this weekend.
Marko Marin, meanwhile, will not take part in training on Wednesday though he hopes to play against Schalke. "I am confident that it will be okay by the weekend," said the German international, who is still labouring with muscular problems in his pelvic area.
Definitely not available on Saturday will be Sokratis and Hunt, who are both suspended for the game and therefore have more time to rehab their injuries. Sokratis was subbed out with a bruised rib against Wolfsburg while Hunt still feels the knee issues which affected him weeks ago. On Monday, Ekici said his 2011 was over with as he continues to deal with a pulled stomach muscle.
