Weser Stadium had a good crowd at the first training of the week Tuesday 6 December 2011 with 27 players on hand with 24 field players and three goalkeepers - including Tim Wiese.
The fans on hand Tuesday had to wait nearly an hour for Wiese and company. "We spoke together about the game," said head coach Thomas Schaaf about the "delay". But the large number of players was nothing unusual. "We have had things like this for a couple weeks. The odd player is healthy again so that we can mix up the roster," said Schaaf. With the first session before the Wolfsburg match, the battle is officially open for the starting spot from Aaron Hunt as he will miss three games due to suspension. "When someone is missing - regardless if that's a suspension or injury - at the same time it's a chance for someone else to step up and use it. I expect from every player every day that they try to get the best out of a situation," said Schaaf.
Werder want to start that already on Saturday in the home match against Wolfsburg. "That will be a very important match for us. We definitely have to win since our goal is to spend the winter break in the international places," said captain Clemens Fritz. "Now it's important to bring some consistency into our game and get the results. That will be decisive for our development," added centre back Andreas Wolf.
A second session is planned for 3 p.m. Absent from the training session will be Mehmet Ekici (pulled stomach muscle), Tim Borowski (rehab) as well as Denni Avdic (also rehab, completed an individual program in the morning with physio Florian Laurerer).
