Werder head coach Thomas Schaaf will have to make due without five players for the home match against Schalke 04 on Saturday as Mehmet Ekici, Theodor Gebre Selassie, Clemens Fritz, Zlatko Junuzovic and Lukas Schmitz will all miss the match.
Gebre Selassie (knee strain) and Ekici (groin problems) were not able to participate in the final training. "The discomfort came about yesterday in training for Memo and Theo got caught in one action and was injured there," said Schaaf, who had already written off having Fritz (broken rib and cheekbone), Junuzovic (knee laceration) and Schmitz (stomach pain) available for the Schalke game. "The losses are significant and will limit our possibilities but we will be able to send a good line-up out onto the pitch tomorrow," said Schaaf.
Werder defender Sokratis will have a lucky charm at Weser Stadium on Saturday in the person of his aunt Anastasia and cousins Lefteri and Smyrni who live in Ulm. The family already watched on at training and tasted the famous Bruzzler sausage.
Schaaf nominated the following 18 players for the match Saturday against FC Schalke 04: Mielitz, Strebinger, Ignjovski, Sokratis, Trybull, Hunt, Bargfrede, De Bruyne, Lukimya, Petersen, Pavlovic, Prödl, Stevanovic, Yildirim, Hartherz, Kroos, Arnautovic, Elia.
