Head coach Thomas Schaaf and his Werder Bremen team started preparations for the second half of the season on Thursday. The training started with a lactate test to analyse the condition levels of the players.
30 Green-Whites complete lactate test
Thirty Werder players ran their laps in light rain under the watchful eyes of many Green-Whites supporters. The only players missing were Raphael Wolf, Levent Aycicek and Predrag Stevanovic. Philipp Bargfrede has returned to full health. "Everything is fine. I can take part in team activities with no problem," said the midfielder, who had been labouring with an Achilles tendon problem. "I am not worried at all about Belek. I have always survived training camps pretty well. It was the same in the summer. The problems don't start until after the training camp. I hope that I can get back into the mix quickly. I am looking forward to the competition. A new year, new luck," said Bargfrede.
Tom Trybull has also returned. "I am fully ready to go again. Now I am looking forward to giving my all in training camp. I have especially good memories of Belek. I was really able to work my way into the team last year. But I am not presumptuous and do not expect things will go the same. I want to move forward step by step. Then everything will come on its own," said the 19-year-old.
First Werder training for new acquisition Pavlovic
Training however started back up at a high level for Bargfrede and Trybull in the afternoon with the first session of the year on the pitch. Also on the grounds for the first time was Werder's new acquisition Mateo Pavlovic, who was officially introduced in the afternoon (see exclusive interview). "Mateo is a very interesting player. He is good in the air but he also has a good technique. I think that he has a big future ahead of him," said Schaaf at the press conference about the Croatian youngster.
After one more day of training in Bremen, the plane for Belek will take off on Saturday as Schaaf's team will intensify their preparations for the start of the second half against German champions Borussia Dortmund (Saturday, 19 January 2013, 6:30 p.m.).
