The next important game for Werder Bremen is coming up Saturday at 3:30 p.m. as the Green-Whites welcome Hanover to Weser Stadium with the hope of gaining three more important points in the fight against relegation.
Going into the home stretch before the winter break, the idea is to "collect as many points as possible", according to Werder coach Viktor Skripnik. And with that in mind, the coach is demanding a reaction to the loss in Frankfurt last Sunday. "Bring home three points, regardless of how!" Werder have been strong at Weser Stadium of late, beating Stuttgart 2-0 and then Paderborn 4-0. It only makes sense then that Rouven Schröder, director of roster planning and scouting, gave a clear goal for the up-coming home match, namely: "We want to defend our castle on Saturday."
It remains to be seen how much young blood there will be in the team. It was predominantly the young players like Levent Aycicek, Davie Selke und Janek Sternberg who stood out recently at Weser Stadium. But Skripnik knows how to deal with up-and-coming talents. "Nobody can expect these players to now lead us up the table and bring us to the Champions League. We want them to develop step by step and hope that they will profit from their appearances and help us move forward," said the coach. Patience and match practice are the magic words. That's because it's difficult to implement new players into the current situation. "We need points. To do that we need players with match practice."
A player like centre back Oliver Hüsing still needs patience before he gets into games, said the coach. Even though the position in the centre of the defence next to the previously suspended Alejandro Gálvez is vacant, it would be too early for an appearance for Hüsing. "Especially the centre back, match practice is important and mistakes can be very decisive," said Skripnik. Aycicek, Selke and Sternberg are a step further. They have already shown that they can hold their own in the Bundesliga business at least at home matches. They could prove themselves again on Saturday. It's all about defending your own castle.
