Things finally get under way on Sunday. SV Werder's first 90 minutes of the 2014-15 season will be played at the Ulm Donau Stadium, where Werder Bremen will face Regionalliga (fourth division) side FV Illertissen in the first round of the German DFB Cup. While his teammates will be fighting for a spot in the second round of the cup, Sebastian Prödl will only be a spectator.

Shortly before the Chelsea friendly, the Austrian international suffered a strained muscle fibre in his left thigh. It was clear already with the initial diagnosis that the defensive boss would miss the first match of the season. "Sebastian Prödl, Ludovic Obraniak (muscular problems) and Theodor Gebre Selassie (oedema in his left thighbone) will definitely miss the match on Sunday," head coach Robin Dutt told a press conference on Thursday.

Dutt: “It will be tight”

There is a big question mark regarding the availability of Franco Di Santo. The Argentinean has completed individual training after his ACL strain but Dutt would not say if he will be fit in time to face Illertissen. "It will be tight with Franco," said the coach.

Despite the absences, Dutt was optimistic looking forward to the cup match, which will start at 2:30 p.m. "We will have a very good team on the pitch for the match," said Dutt.
