SV Werder were doing a double shift to start their final week of training ahead of their first competitive match of the season. There was the obligatory lactate test in the morning at the Platz 11 grounds and then Fritz, Garcia and Co. were having an intensive session on the training grounds in the afternoon. Not on hand was Theodor Gebre Selassie, who is highly questionable for the German Cup match at FV Illertissen. The Czech international is labouring with an oedema in his right thigh bone. It's a problem that has gotten considerably worse over the course of the preparations.

"We have to completely shut down the burden for Theo. It's very questionable if he can play on Sunday," said the Werder coach, who also was without Ludovic Obraniak on Monday as the Polish international was held out of training with minor muscle problems. "With him, it's purely a precautionary measure. I assume that he will get back into training in the coming days," said Dutt.

Getting better is Franco Di Santo. The Argentinean did not train with his teammates at the start of the week but he went through an individual session on the training grounds with physiotherapist Sven Plagge. "I feel the improvement, it's getting better every day. My goal is to get back into training soon but getting back to training and playing in the match on Sunday are two entirely different matters. That will be tight," said the Argentinean.
