Mesut Özil played the position recently for the German national team against Ireland and Barcelona perfected the tactical variation with Lionel Messi and the Spanish national team also plays in this style. The talk is about the false nine - as it's called nowadays. As part of the new game revolution, the classical central striker is being pushed further and further aside. And SV Werder could institute this variation on Saturday in Wolfsburg as Nils Petersen and Franco Di Santo are both out injured. But what does the false mean and who could fill the position on Saturday?
"It's not a classical nine who just moves around in the box but someone who also leaves the position here and there, goes into the midfield to create a man advantage and speculate that the two centre backs will not leave their spots but stay in their positions, therefore creating an out-numbering situation," Dutt described at the official press conference ahead of the Wolfsburg match.
The Werder coach is looking for the ideal solution to solve his team's problems in the attack as Petersen and Di Santo will both miss the match. "We must find a tactical solution in the first place. We are trying a lot of things in training to also get a feeling about how it could work on the pitch. We are not just talking about one position but it also depends on the other three offensive positions. We have to see how it fits best for us," said Dutt about his idea. But he did not yet know 100 percent how his tactical solution would be filled personnel wise.
Melvyn Lorenzen, Özkan Yildirim, Aaron Hunt and Martin Kobylanski are also potential candidates for the position. "Of course I can imagine playing up front but there are many other options," said the deputy captain Hunt, who regularly drops back in the midfield to create playmaking space and build up the attack. "Even if I were to play up front, I would not just stay at the position but would rotate a lot. There is always a lot of switching in our game. We have to make up for the loss of both of our strikers."
