It was the final training session before the big start of the competitive season. Werder head coach Robin Dutt on Saturday gathered his team at the Weser Stadium training grounds one final time before the German DFB Cup first round match against 1. FC Saarbrücken on Sunday 4 August 2013 at 2:30 p.m. (live ticker on WERDER.DE starting at 2:15 p.m.).
One player who has been working for months on his comeback and will finally make his return to a game roster is Raphael Wolf. The Werder keeper will be part of the Green-Whites roster for the first time in nearly eight months after an ACL injury. "It's a nice feeling to be back. It worked out really well in the test against Erfurt. I am completely pain-free and am just looking forward to Sunday," said Wolf.
Lukas Schmitz, Philipp Bargfrede, Predrag Stevanovic, Tom Trybull, Richard Strebinger and Eljero Elia will miss the cup match in Saarbrücken with injuries or sickness. "Unfortunately it didn't work out with ‘Elli'. The grippe infection hasn't subsided entirely yet. It would be too dangerous to have him play with antibiotics in this heat. I feel really bad for ‘Elli'. He really had a great preparation and would have deserved to have played," said Dutt.
The 48-year-old Werder coach nominated the follow 18 players for the match in Saarbrücken: Mielitz, Wolf - Caldirola, Lukimya, Makiadi, Arnautovic, Fritz, Ekici, Hunt, Prödl, Junuzovic, Ignjovski, Kroos, Gebre Selassie, Petersen, Hartherz, Yildirim, Füllkrug.
