On the Day before Werder Bremen's first away game in the new Bundesliga season at Bayer 04 Leverkusen, Sunday 14.08.2011 (kick-off 5:30pm), the questions which had been concerning trainer Thomas Schaaf were finally answered. Philipp Bargfrede has not made the squad! On Friday, the Werder coach had commented on the chance of the defensive midfielder participating as being "more than just slim". It is now clear that Bargfrede will not be involved at the BayArena as he continues to recover from an injury picked up against Kaiserslautern last Saturday.

The new Serbian signing, Aleksandr Ignjovski, will also miss out due to the current lack of a work permit. "These things take time," was the brief remark from Thomas Schaaf. There was more positive news from Claudio Pizarro, who is fit again and can present his coach with a further option as he returns to the Green-White's squad.

Thomas Schaaf nominated the following 17 players to make the trip to Leverkusen for the second match day of the 2011/2012 Bundesliga season:
Wiese, Mielitz, Fritz, Schmitz, Sokratis, Mertesacker, Prödl, Wesley, Hunt, Marin, Ekici, Trinks, Arnautovic, Rosenberg, Wagner, Thy, Pizarro
