SV Werder Bremen picked up a big success in the social web. According to a study from the private Macromedia Academy for Media and Communication (MHMK), the Green-Whites are Germany's Social Media champions in sports, finishing ahead of Hannover and the basketball club Alba Berlin.
The study evaluated various quantitative and qualitative features (for details see the entire study) of the social web portals of the Bundesliga teams from football, handball, basketball and ice hockey as well as the league federations. It was determined that SV Werder was tops among the social networks Facebook, Twitter and Google+ and the Green-Whites finished ninth in You Tube.
"This is a great honour for us. It shows that we are taking the right path and the mix of informational and entertainment content as well as questionnaires, competitions and participatory actions is right," said media director Tino Polster. "But we also know how to classify this study and will not rest on our laurels. Instead we will continue to look for creative ways of giving fans rare impressions and offering campaigns on Facebook, Twitter and Google+."
SV Werder had a great campaign on the final game day of the past Bundesliga season. "During the game against Schalke, right after Claudio Pizarro scored a goal, we began offering flocked and hand-signed Piza jerseys," said Polster. "What made it special was that the fans could make the purchase without even leaving our Facebook page. The campaign was well received by our supporters, who snatched up our entire stock available in just a short time."
