Twelve months fly by like nothing - highs and lows, celebrations and disappointments, departures and new faces. The year 2012 was one of major change which was signified not only by personnel changes. It's not easy to keep track of everything. So WERDER.DE put together it's Year in Review with some of the most extraordinary Green-Whites moments of the year. Today in Part Two: the five Social Media highlights.
Werder Bremen intensified their Social Media activities in 2012 and set new marks in three channels. The club reached 400,000 fans in Facebook in June and already has some 58,000 followers on Google+. On Twitter, nearly 55,000 people are following Werder. Only one Bundesliga club reached the marks with Google+ and Twitter quicker than Werder. In Social Media platforms, the Green-Whites rank among the top four in all Bundesliga rankings, giving them a spot in the would-be Champions League!
The Social Media message of the year by far was the Facebook Status Update after the 2-0-derby victory over Hamburg in September, which received more than 40,000 likes, resulted in 1,500 comments and reached more than 425,000 people.
This year, Werder fans received more unique information and interactive offers on Facebook than ever before. In addition to the regular entries and exclusive photos about training and entertaining news about the team, there were new interactive campaigns. Every two weeks, fans have the chance to ask questions to a Werder player. The most creative suggestions are selected and answered by Fritz, Petersen and co. in WERDER magazine.
Bremen supporters also could get closer to the Werder players via Twitter in 2012. Niclas Füllkrug and Zlatko Junuzovic both took out time at the start of the season for a live chat over Twitter, answering fans' questions in 140 characters.
"That was an entirely different opportunity to communicate with the fans. Some different questions were asked which interested the fans. For example, private questions. It was very fun," said "Zladdi".
Since the end of 2011, Werder also keeps in contact with their fans with a Google+ account. In the first complete year with the newest Social Media channel, the new acquisitions Nils Petersen and Assani Lukimya used the versatility of the platform at the beginning of the season and introduced themselves to fans in a video chat, called a hangout. The action was an entirely new one for "Luki". "I had only known chats in text form. But I think this possibility is super. The fans had a chance to get to know us and we got an impression of what issues were interesting to the fans," said Lukimya.
Social Media is no one-way street and Werder maintains an active exchange between club and fans. When the 50,000 followers mark was reached in Twitter, Werder's Social Media department thought up a special thank you for the diligent online community. As a representative for the entire user community, active user Johanna Göddecke was invited to Weser Stadium for the home match against Mainz.
The 20-year-old did not just meet her favourite player, Clemens Fritz, and get presents. She also was allowed to tweet during the match as a fan reporter in the name of Werder Bremen.
