Two shots, two goals - Karim Guédé was the match winner for Freiburg with a brace in their 4-1 victory over Eintracht Frankfurt. He didn't just receive recognition from his own ranks but also from a friend nearly 600km to the north in Cedrick Makiadi.
"I called him and congratulated him on his goals. I was really happy for him," said Makiaki. The striker Guédé and midfielder Makiaki played one and a half years together at Freiburg and a real friendship developed. In the summer of 2013, Makiadi transferred to Werder while his friend stayed with Freiburg. The two will see each other again Friday evening.
Gladbach, Frankfurt, Hamburg, Nuremberg, Stuttgart - The Green-Whites have put together five matches without a loss. And number six should follow in Freiburg. "We will be flying to Freiburg with a confidence that we have worked hard to get over the last few games. At the moment, we are an uncomfortable team for our opponents, as the recent results show," said Nils Petersen. "With a victory we could clear more space from the relegation zone and continue our streak. Still, Freiburg will do everything in their power to bring us back down into the mess of the relegation fight. I am looking forward to a heated showdown."
Personnel-wise, the coaching staff has a full group of players from which to choose. Eljero Elia was able to train again on Wednesday after missing the beginning of the week with a bruised toe. And Lukas Schmitz also returned to the pitch after taking Monday off for private reasons. "We have had nearly everybody on board for a few weeks now. We have almost too many choices. But that's a good thing," said assistant coach Damir Buric.
