The plane was on the runway in Antalya. The crew is waiting to fly SV Werder back to Bremen when Davie Selke and Theodor Gebre Selassie call out something from their seats. It was about the seating arrangement and as always the two went back and forth and were laughing. But to the surprise of the fans on board, they were speaking Czech and not German. "I understand everything but can only speak little bits," Selke explained to WERDER.TV after arrival.
The fathers of both players are from Ethiopia and both of their mothers are of Czech descent. It's a similarity that really connects the duo. "Theo is my teacher. He always tries to teach me Czech and doesn't give up," joked the Stuttgart native Selke.
The U19 European champion has worn the SV Werder jersey for just about two years. He was able to break through to the professional team in the first half of the season. Selke scored four goals in the league and one in the German Cup, having made 16 competitive match appearances thus far in the 2014-15 season. "To be honest I really didn't expect that. I really treasure that," said Selke humbly. "It takes time to sort it all out and learn how to deal with it."
"Positives of the job outweigh the negatives"
But the tall striker with the good scoring sense likes the role he has at SVW. "I am very, very happy and enjoy every day," said Selke. That makes it easier to deal with the occasionally really tough conditioning session during the intensive preparations for the second half. "The positives of the job outweigh the negatives," he grinned. "You are allowed to play in front of this exhilarating stadium and do what you always wanted to do. That makes it easier to take a hard day."
