Lukas Schmitz returned to the team for the first time on Wednesday after his broken tarsal. Upon leaving the training camp in Zillertal, Schmitz went for further tests at the Bremen Clinic Mitte and a specialist in Zurich. "The break is not as unfortunate as initially feared so that an operation would not be advantageous," announced Schmitz.

Still, head coach Robin Dutt will have to make do without the 24-year-old over a longer time frame. "It's still a break and we still are looking at him being six weeks out," said the Werder coach. Schmitz, who began a rehab program in Hattingen, meanwhile has a clear goal in mind. "I would like to be back on the pitch at the beginning of September," said the left back, who will definitely not be available for the German DFB Cup first round in Saarbrücken. "Hopefully the guys reach the second round. If all goes well, I could be back by then," said Schmitz with a hopeful grin.

But there was good news about Zlatko Junuzovic, who received a knock on his ankle Wednesday in the test match against PEC Zwolle and had to be subbed out in the 38th minute. "I was lucky. The ankle did not swell up over night and the pain is not that bad. The ankle is bruised. The tendons and ligaments are not impacted," said a relieved ‘Juno' after an MRI Thursday morning. Junuzovic is currently receiving physiotherapy treatment but a longer break from training is not expected.
