The suffering is nearly over! Lukas Schmitz is (almost) back! After breaking a foot tarsal and missing action since the test match against 1860 Munich in Zillertal, the 24-year-old has worked hard the past two months on his comeback.
"I am pretty good again. I am on my way to improvement. I have been in running training for a week. I may be still doing that on the treadmill, but I am certain that I will get past it soon and be back on the pitch," said Schmitz about his current state of health.
"If you sometimes give too much, it's clear that the foot will have a reaction here or there. On the whole though I have survived the rehab without any complications," said Schmitz, who is confidently looking forward to his comeback. "I am very optimistic that I can finally get back on the pitch in the coming days. They say that you are usually ready for team training about eight weeks after this kind of injury. That would be next week already."
But Schmitz has also been able to follow the development of the team from the sidelines. "What's important is that we have only conceded one goal in three matches. You can see the handprint of Robin Dutt, who said from the first day on that we have to have a strong order and play well in the back first. That has worked really well thus far and I think if we can do that throughout the whole season, it would be the foundation for a good season," said Schmitz.
Schmitz hopes to do his part in working on this foundation soon. His personal goal is returning to team training next week.
