Lukas Schmitz will wear the Werder diamond on his chest next season as the 22-year-old defender signed a four-year contract until 30 June 2015 with Bremen, Werder manager Klaus Allofs announced Friday. "We were able to agree on this transfer after some good talks with Schalke. Lukas is a motivated, young player who will give us options in our defence. He showed with Schalke that he can play on the left side," said Allofs. Head coach Thomas Schaaf was excited about the new acquisition. "We were going after him intensively the last couple of weeks and are happy that we were able to make it happen. We are bringing in a player who can develop with whom we would like to have success over the long haul," said the coach.

The left-footed Schmitz had agreed to join Werder some time ago and last week was in Bremen to complete the physical. Now he's looking forward to the challenge. "If you have anything to do with the Bundesliga then you have to be interested in Werder Bremen as well. They always had strong teams that played exciting football. I am happy to be part of Werder now. I hope that time before the start of training goes by quickly and that we can play up top with a young, hungry team," said Schmitz.

Schmitz spent his youth days with DJK Märkisch Hattingen 1925, TuS Bredenscheid 1907 and until 2007 with TSG Sprockhövel save for one year with VfL Bochum. Between 2007 and 2009 the Hattingen native played for Bochum's second team and qualified for the Regionalliga West in 2008. For the 2009-10 season, he moved to Schalke where he was originally brought on to play with the second team in the Regionalliga West. But senior side head coach Felix Magath added the 20-year-old to the professional squad for the fifth Bundesliga game day. And he made his professional debut a week later playing against Wolfsburg. Schmitz was retroactively given a professional contract as of 1 July 2009 and was a regular among the starters on the left side. Schmitz has now played 52 Bundesliga matches with eight appearances in the Champions League and nine in the German Cup.
