The training week for Werder’s players is slowly coming to an end as the start of the second half of the season against Hoffenheim on 15 January 2011 at 3:30 p.m. is just around the corner. But one Werder player will not be available for the game as full back Dominik Schmidt missed Thursday’s training after leaving practice early yesterday. And he will not be fit in time for kickoff on Saturday. An examination Wednesday afternoon determined that Schmidt had suffered a torn muscle fibre in the rear portion of his right thigh, making the 23-year-old unavailable against Hoffenheim.

Despite the loss of one defensive option, head coach Thomas Schaaf looked back positively to the past few intensive days of training at the pre-game press conference Thursday afternoon. “Altogether we worked very well and really tackled things and implemented them well in training. What didn’t really show our progress were our test match results,” said the coach. And the coach added that his team remains concentrated in their work. And Werder’s players are determined to put together a much better second half than the first half of the season. “During training you could definitely see how active the team is working and how much they want to do things better. I hope that works on Saturday in the game,” said Schaaf looking forward to the weekend. Manager Klaus Allofs agreed and said none of Werder’s players don’t realise what situation the team is in to start the second half. “Everyone is concentrated. I haven’t seen anybody who is running around bitter. Instead they are all looking forward,” said Allofs.
