Werder Bremen will open the up-coming 2013-14 Bundesliga season on the 9-11 August 2013 weekend with an away match against promoted side Eintracht Braunschweig. The pairing was announced Friday afternoon 21 June 2013 at a press conference by the German Football League (DFL).

Braunschweig, who won the German title in 1967, return to the German top flight for the first time in 28 years after finishing the Bundesliga 2 as runners-up. Werder and Eintracht last played a Bundesliga match in 1985 when Bremen won 2-0 with goals by Rudi Völler and Uwe Reinders.

"That will be a heated start. We will meet up with a very motivated promoted side in Braunschweig. It will certainly be a real highlight right away for our fans. Our supporters will get used to travelling early on. The DFL gave us three away matches in the first four game days. That will not be easy but we are taking it as is. We have to play as a team. It's not our top request," said manager Thomas Eichin about the start of the season.

The much-anticipated North Derby against Hamburg will be played on the sixth match day (20-22 September 2013). The Green-Whites will have to wait until the 15th match day (6-8 December 2013) for their match-up against Bayern Munich as the treble winners and new coach Josep Guardiola will come to Weser Stadium in Bremen.
