Big news for SV Werder as the Green-Whites will kick off the 50th Bundesliga season with the opening match Friday night 24 August 2012 against two-time reigning champions Borussia Dortmund at Signal Iduna Park at 8:30 p.m. The match-up is the same that opened the first Bundesliga season in 1963-64 - albeit with the host team being switched.
The North Derby against Hamburg at Weser Stadium will take place already on the second game day 31 August-2 September 2012 before the Green-Whites have their "small" North Derby a week later at Hannover. The match against record champions Bayern Munich will take place on the sixth game day (28-30 September 2012) at Weser Stadium. The 2012-13 Bundesliga season will finish for Werder with an away match against Nuremberg. The German football association DFL announced the schedule on Tuesday.
"It's great when you can open an anniversary season," said Werder manager Klaus Allofs. While head coach Thomas Schaaf added: "When you play in the opening match at the double winners and two-time reigning league champions, then you get all the attention - it doesn't get any better." Schaaf also is looking forward to the early North Derby against Hamburg. "It's very interesting to start the home season with the North Derby," said the coach.
Schaaf said now the focus is on the start of preparations next week. "We have to prepare in this time very intensively so that we can have some good showings to start the season. The conditions are good," said Schaaf. "We already have a squad together now with which we can work very well and we will have a lot of players on hand." Allofs also looked forward to the up-coming season. "We have an intensive preparation ahead of us and I hope that we can start the Bundesliga well-prepared. Despite the European Championship, I am already now looking forward to the start," said Allofs.
