Werder's long-time head coach Thomas Schaaf will fulfill the desire of his former player Torsten Frings and coach one of the select teams at Frings' farewell match on Saturday 7 September 2013. Schaaf has confirmed to Frings that he will be on hand for the game. It will be Schaaf's first public appearance since SV Werder parted ways with the coach in May.
Frings was excited about the confirmation. "It was so important to me that Thomas Schaaf will sit on the bench at my farewell match and lead my Werder team. He played a major role in my career and I will be thankful to Thomas my whole life. I could always trust him, and he always helped me to develop. In addition, he really gave me advice in every facet of life," said Frings.
It will certainly be a very special day for Schaaf as well when players like Wiese, Baumann, Eilts, Micoud, Ailton, Julio Cesar, Borowski, Klasnic, Naldo, Diego, Ümit Davala, Andree Wiedener among others come out to honour Frings at Weser Stadium.
Schaaf said yes to Frings under one condition. "This is Torsten Frings' day. Looking back on his extraordinary career is the focus. I hope that the fans respect that and forego any actions that could distract that," said Schaaf, referring to any actions about his own person.
"SV Werder also addressed me about a farewell but I made it clear that official events, interviews and other commitments are not up for discussion for me until further notice. Since the day of my severance from the office as head coach I have decided for myself to not appear publicly for an indefinite period of time," added Schaaf.
Schaaf is not the only guest coach enhancing Frings' farewell match. The other coach in the match will be Matthias Sammer, another important coach for Frings during his playing days. Trying to make things difficult for Schaaf's team will be players such as Weidenfeller, Kehl, Ballack, Schneider, Ricken, Metzelder, Wörns, Matthäus, van Bommel, Salihamidzic among others.
Frings also has received commitments from Oliver Kahn, Johan Micoud, Paul Stalteri, Fabian Ernst, Zecke Neuendorf and Aaron Winter.
