Samuel Firmino de Jesus has been training with the Green-Whites since last Thursday but the final signatures between the club and player were exchanged on Monday. And on this Wednesday he was officially presented as a new acquisition in the press conference room at Weser Stadium.

"I am very happy to be in a team with so much quality"

"We looked around very intensively during the winter break and came upon Samuel. It's an interesting option with his skills. He can play both centre back and full back and is left-footed," said manager Klaus Allofs about the new acquisition. "This is a transfer which we did extra. But when you have the chance to test a player under competitive conditions for half a year and acquire him without a transfer fee, then you have to do that," said Allofs, who admitted that Samuel had somewhat surprisingly landed with the Green-Whites. "We didn't have him on our list about a quarter of a year ago and then became aware of him through some talks with agents and people who observe the market in Brazil."

Head coach Thomas Schaaf had some positive impressions of the new defender in his first couple days of training. "You could see that he's trying to take on the duties and thinking about them. He fully identifies himself with the work here but we certainly have to give him time. He is very motivated and wants to bring his skills into the team," said Schaaf. Samuel himself is happy about being in Bremen. "I am very happy to be in a team with such high quality," said the 1.90m defender, who admitted he was in Europe for the first time. "It is very cold here but I am not sick and feel very good," joked Samuel in Portuguese. But he would like to overcome the language barrier soon. "The first thing I discussed with Klaus Allofs was that I would get German lessons. I will try my best but I cannot guarantee that I can immediately speak fluent German," said Samuel.

From opponents to teammates: "Only knew Wesley as opponent"

The first German lessons will follow in the coming days, but Samuel has already put behind him the first training sessions. "In Brazil you regularly train twice a day, but the sessions are not as intensive. Here it occasionally happens that there is only one training on a day but it is very intensive and professional," described the Brazilian. "I am happy to take part in such professional training." Fellow Brazilians Naldo and Wesley will definitely help Samuel get used to things on and off the pitch. "I am looking forward to the return of Naldo. He can certainly give me many valuable tips. He is a well-recognised player both in Germany and Brazil - and one who is admired," said the new Bremen defender.
Samuel Firmino de Jesus is also happy to have Wesley as a teammate. "I only knew Wesley as an opponent. I am certain that we will get along well. He is also a very, very good player who has a high significance in Brazil," said the defender, who will wear No. 25 with Werder.
