Rugby change and a bit of luck

Werder players spent Thursday playing with their hands instead of their feet. And Sebastian Mielitz went after Clemens Fritz straight away.

Some fans once again came up with something special. Instead of consolation chocolate such as after the 3-1 loss against Bayern Munich, they connected "Good luck" delicacies to the door handles and windshield washers of the players' cars before training. If the supporters had some visionary powers, they would have added an extra "Get well soon" to Sebastian Prödl's car. The Austrian had to leave Thursday's afternoon training after just half an hour because of pain in his left hip bone. "I took a step to the side and I felt a pull," said the Austrian international. There is still not a diagnosis.

That came even though the training started with a good mood. Before the players played the training match, they played a bit of rugby. "The spirit is good. Of course the goal against Gladbach made us angry but we want to get things done and improve," said head coach Thomas Schaaf. "We have to remain alert," added manager Klaus Allofs.

Hunt and Schmidt still without problems

Aaron Hunt once again played in the game on Thursday. "As it looks now, he has dealt well with the burden of training. Maybe there is a chance that he can be in the game squad," said Schaaf at the mid-day press conference before the game against Nuremberg. Dominik Schmidt, who has been back at team training since the beginning of the week, also looks like he has coped well with the training burden.
