Hanging heads, reflective looks and an end of the year to forget. Once again, Werder Bremen showed their ugly "away face" in the blowout loss against Schalke. "We just are not doing the things that lead to success. We were scared and un-concentrated just like at Bayern and in Mönchengladbach. It is very aggravating that we did not finish off the year better. That's why we are all bitterly disappointed," said manager Klaus Allofs. "This kind of game cannot happen. We cannot just accept it like that," said a deeply disappointed Thomas Schaaf about the performance of his team. "Away from home, we do not have the presence and self-confidence and we have not been able to put our opponents under pressure."
Clemens Fritz was thinking about his team's supporters. "Our fans travel through this country every two weeks and we disappoint them. We can only apologise to them," said the Werder captain, who is looking for the causes for the road woes. "I cannot explain it. We are all very disappointed. We just are not doing what the coach tells us on the road. I don't know if that has even turned into a blockade." Allofs wanted to solve the blockade of not being able to win at the top teams in the league. "We wanted to straighten this fact out today. But we were unable to get it done. But heads up. We will work on it so that our fans, who have supported us tremendously despite everything, will soon see successful football away from home."
More reaction to the game:
Naldo: "It is difficult to put into words why this is happening. Today we didn't have the quality to win against this Schalke team. But we cannot forget these losses, we have to continually remember them and work on our weaknesses away."
Aleksander Ignjovski: "That was a disastrous match for us. All told we have not played well away and that continued today. We were not concentrated enough."
Lukas Schmitz: "That was a very bad game for us and I had imagined my return here much differently. We cannot play like we did today."
