The goosebump moments at the season finale started pretty early. Before the match, the team surprised observers with a very special tribute to Thomas Schaaf, entering the pitch with a T-shirt reading: "You never totally go! Thanks Thomas!" The team started well and played a strong first half, accompanied by consistent chanting of "Thomas Schaaf" from the fans.
The second part of the afternoon went typically for this season as Werder failed to add on the second goal and allowed Nuremberg back into the match with two lapses in concentration.
WERDER.DE collected reaction after the match:
Wolfgang Rolff: "Of course when you sit next to someone on the bench for nine years then you miss something in this kind of match. But there wasn't much time for too many emotions today. It was more today about professionalism. The task was to guide the team. We the coaches concentrated on that today. We will think about everything else next week."
Clemens Fritz: "We wanted to win but could not get it done because we let Nuremberg back into the match with two lapses in concentration on set pieces. We needed to make it 2-0 to calm things down but we couldn't get it done."
Sebastian Mielitz: "We have struggled all season after the re-start and it happened again today. I cannot understand it. That is really bitter."
Kevin De Bruyne: "The match was symbolic for the entire season. We start well and then can't get anything else done. We concede silly goals and aren't awarded a penalty. It's a shame that it wasn't enough for a victory in the final match. It was a season of highs and lows with a lot of difficulties and we just have to be happy to have kept the league. For me personally, it was a good year with many experiences and a lot of ups and downs - a year that helped me push forward."
