The second match of the second half and the second draw. After an intensive contest, SV Werder Bremen played to a 1-1 draw against Bayer Leverkusen. Still the Green-Whites appeared satisfied with the result. "We played really well and carried an excitement and euphoria throughout the game. We want to continue that. That was an entertaining and exciting match with unbelievable tempo. Maybe there were too few goals and we would have liked to pick up two more points. But still, I would like to say congratulations to the team. That was an exciting match," praised head coach Thomas Schaaf, who started the youngest starting line-up in 33 years and had two Bundesliga debutants on the pitch.
WERDER.DE collected reaction to the game afterwards:
Captain Clemens Fritz: "It was a very intensive match. It went back and forth and both teams played for the victory, which we all hoped to get today. Unfortunately we could not get the winning goal as Rosi's ball hit the post. We were missing just a bit of luck."
Manager Klaus Allofs: "That felt like a tight victory for us. We showed that we deservedly are one spot ahead of Leverkusen on the table. We played with enormous motivation. It's too bad that we were not completely rewarded for the performance. But we can build upon this. We would have rather won but we can absolutely be satisfied with this performance."
Debutant Florian Hartherz: "I was nervous even though I slept very good. But when sit in the team bus and you see the fans flocking to the stadium then you get a bit anxious. But the longer the match went the better I found my way into the game. Every scene then gave me more courage."
