It was a very special day for the Werder strikers - with one snatching a brace and the other making his starting eleven debut. The first match day of the season couldn't have gone much better for Markus Rosenberg and Lennart Thy - as both admitted after the game.

"I was absolutely delighted when I learned that I would be starting today. I really wasn't expecting things to go so quickly and to be in the starting eleven on the first day of the season. In training I had been determined to give my all and things went well in the pre-season period. Today I just tried to put everything else out of my head and focus on my game," commened Thy, who even had the chance to mark his Bundesliga debut with a goal: "Looking back, it's of course a pity that my first shot wasn't a goal but the win is much more important than a goal of my own."

On Saturday it was Markus Rosenberg who filled the goal-scoring role, but the Swede's 19 year old strike partner was not at all begrudging of his team mate: "I am really happy for Markus. I'm not at all surprised by it though because I know what he is capable of. Rosi is a cool character and our combination play worked out well. We discuss what we are to do and the runs we made came off," noted the young front man.

Rosenberg himself was happy to reciprocate his young team mates compliments: "I often played together with Lenni during the pre-season preparations. He is very mobile, moves well and opens up spaces." On his own two goals, Werder's Prodigal Son said: "The two goals were simple and the whole team played really well."

Trainer Thomas Schaaf was also very satisfied with the performance of his goal-getter: "Rosi worked well in pre-season and earned himself an advantage. He does a, lot for us and our game. He has become very determined and that helped him get his two goals today." General manager Klaus Allofs added: "The year in Spain did him good," and the striker agrees: "I was playing with a team on the very top level in Spain. I had always hoped that I would be able to return to Bremen. I then had some good talks and a very good feeling about my return."
